A travelling-hearth furnace is a furnace where billets are loaded and unloaded on the hearth by a workshop crane, travelling out of the furnace. This furnace is used for large loads and when the load has several layers.
The principle of the furnace operation is as follows. The hatch is raised in the preheated furnace. Then the hearth is rolled out from the furnace, resting on track guided rollers or wheels. The billets are loaded on it by a crane in a certain order. At this time, the burners do not operate, and the walls and ceilings strongly radiate heat to the place where the hearth has just stood. Upon loading, the hearth is rolled back, the hatch is lowered, and the burners are lit.
Combustion products are removed from the workspace through the window in the sidewalls and through smoke channel to a heat exchanger, and then into the atmosphere. Upon completion of heat treatment, the hearth is rolled out, the heated billets are replaced by cold billets, and the process is repeated.
A muffle furnace with a fixed hearth is a furnace where billets are loaded and unloaded by mechanical devices installed outside the furnace. This furnace does not has such extensive heat losses that occur in the travel–hearth furnace when loading metal on the hearth.
A feature of the muffle furnace with a fixed hearth is availability of an underhearth firepot for fuel combustion.
The principle of operation of the furnace is as follows. Before loading, the billets are placed on a special stand. Then, using a floor machine, all the load is completely transported to the desired furnace. The hatch of the furnace is raised, and the load is fed to the furnace on the lugs of a ground-type charging machine. Then, the load is transferred from the ground-type charging machine to the hearth. The stands, where the billets were stacked, remain in the furnace during the heat treatment. They are used repeatedly and therefore made of heat resistant steel.
Upon billet loading, the burners in underhearth firepots start working. Combustion products pass under the hearth and enter the workspace.
Combustion products are removed through holes in the side walls at the hearth level and near the roof. Smoke from the left and right walls of the furnace is accumulated in one channel and then goes through the heat exchanger to a chimney.
A bell-type furnace is a furnace of cyclic operation for heat treatment of strip coils, sheets and wire coils. The inner bell (muffle) protects the metal from oxidation, and the outer one is lined with fire-proof bricks, where burners or electric heaters are mounted. The muffle is made of heat-resistant steel. To seal the bell-type furnace, sand shutters are used. To accelerate metal heating, the internal circulation fan is used, which creates an intense circulation of protective gas under the muffle.
The principle of operation of the bell-type furnace is determined by process, which is divided into three approximately similar stages: heating to 650-800°C, cooling down to 150°C under the muffle and without it, and the last stage is unloading and loading of the stand. Similar duration of the stages enables to use three stands with one heating cover and two muffles. The muffle and heating cover are set on the top of the coils. Then, the protective gas is supplied (95% N2 and 5% H2) and circulated using circulating fan. Then, the burners are lit.
Combustion products are moved between the heating muffle and the cover and are removed to chimneys and flue hog using an injector (injected environment - air compressor).
A conveyor furnace is a furnace equipped with an inner conveyor (generally chain conveyor), which transports heated billets from loading area to discharging area. The heating temperature in the furnace range 850 - 1050°C. This temperature is limited by the heat resistance of the conveyor components.
The main features of a typical conveyor furnace:
The principle of the furnace operation is as follows. Products are transported by the roller conveyor to the end of the loading and are transferred to the chain conveyor. Passing the first half of the furnace, the products are warmed by combustion products coming from the opposite direction. In the second half of the furnace, combustion products are moved in one direction with the metal, so the metal temperature achieved is maintained. On the exit from the furnace, the product is transferred from the chain conveyor to the outlet roller conveyor.
Combustion products, which are produced by fuel combustion in furnace underhearth firepots using injection burners, enter the furnace working space through the holes, wash products, moving on a conveyor belt and through the windows of loading and discharging are removed through the chimney. The smoke is not used for heating air and gas.
A roller-hearth furnace is a continuous firing furnace. The hearth of this furnace consists of a large number of rotating rollers with a special drive, made of heat-resistant steel or water cooled. The heating process is performed with fuel gas using a large number of burners or radiant tubes which are arranged on the longitudinal walls of the furnace above and below the rollers.
A roller hearth can be easily integrated in the workshop roller conveyors, so this furnace perfectly suits the conditions of mass production compared to other heat treatment furnaces.
Rollers are the most crucial element of a roller-hearth furnace. Their durability depends on the temperature in the furnace and furnace dimensions. The furnace temperature reaches 1200°C, thus rollers are water-cooled, with a heat resistant chromium-nickel steel smooth barrel. To avoid deformation of the roller barrels, it must rotate continuously stopping is allowable maximum 30-35 minutes.
The principle of furnace operation is as follows. Metal to be heat treated falls on the receiving table directly from the roller conveyor, if the furnace is built into the process line, or transported by crane. The front door of the furnace and the metal is fed into the furnace in addition to the existing loads; the door closes. The metal gradually moves on permanently rotating rollers and is heated to the desired temperature. Due to the lateral location of the burners, various methods of heat treatment are possible.
Upon completion of the heat treatment, the metal is fed to the roller conveyor connected with the chamber of accelerated water cooling. Thus, the furnace operates continuously, is replenished cold metal and gradually produces heated metal.
Fuel combustion products are removed from the furnace working space through special channels in the ends of the furnace, which are joined into one stream, pass heat exchanger for heating the air and through the chimney are discharged into the atmosphere.
A strand-type furnace is a continuous furnace for thermal or chemical-thermal treatment of metal skelps, tapes or wires, as well as for heating strips of continuous furnace pipe welding mills.
On the basis of design strand type furnaces are divided into:
Vertical furnaces can treat the tape with the thickness of up to 1 mm due to frequent bends and horizontal furnaces - up to 4-6 mm (straight broaching, without bends). The advantage of vertical furnaces is smaller production area and tape surface leveling, that can be wavy or bruising before the heat treatment.
The principle of operation of the furnace is as follows. At the beginning of the line, there are two decoilers. One works and neighboring prepares. The tape should pass through the furnace continuously without stopping. When the tape ends on one decoiler, then its rear edge is cut and fixed on the welding machine. The front end of the new roll is fed, its edge is cut and ends of the previous and the new coils are welded on a welding machine. When driving, the belt surface is exposed to conditioning in a special bath, dried and, after a loop tower enters the strand-type furnace consisting of a number of chambers performing their defined functions (holding chamber, controlled cooling chamber, accelerated cooling chamber, heating chamber, heating chamber by products of incomplete combustion, coating chamber).
After the furnace, there is a metal hold station, which allows welding strips and switching between the coilers without interrupting the workflow. A strand-type furnace is usually filled with protective atmosphere (except heating chamber) consisting of nitrogen (96% N2) and hydrogen (4% H2) as the ammonia dissociation products. The belt moves due to pulling rollers located behind the furnace.
Fuel combustion products are removed from the furnace working space through special channels that are connected into one stream, passes through the chimney and discharged into the atmosphere.
