A screw-cutting lathe is used to process billets of non-ferrous metals, aluminum, high-strength steels. The lathe has a large speed range, it uses tools of high-speed steel, and sintered metal. This equipment performs quite wide range of works:

  • internal and external processing all types of surfaces (cylindrical, conical, end);
  • segmenting;
  • channel boring;
  • drilling and
  • cutting any threads.

The screw-cutting lathes are the most versatile machines; they are applied both individually and in mass production as well as while performing repair works. The main dimensional parameters of these machines are the height of the centers and center-to-center distances. The headstock installed on the machine base contains transmission, which is used to change the spindle speed. Here, a tailstock is located; its quill is the back center. A billet to be treated is secured between the centers, or in a cartridge, or a special device that depends on the machine design. The blades are fixed in the holder for blade located on the support. The tools like drills, core drills, reamers are set in the tailstock quill.

The support is moved automatically by a feed mechanism. Interchangeable gears and feeding box rotate a lead screw or a running roller, then, the movement is transmitted to a support of the machine.

The lower slides on a support move (sometimes automatically) in the longitudinal direction along the base. Due to the high processing speed, there is excessive heat, which causes extension of the billet. In this regard, it is important to ensure constant clamping force that is achieved by using any spring, pneumatic and hydraulic jacks in a tailstock. They shift quills to the right when the billet is heated.

The screw-cutting lathes can perform different types of treatments and use a variety of tools, respectively. Depending on the nature of the processing, blades can be rough and finish ones. The front edge of the blade may have various views: plane to a plane with an inverse chamfer or with a recess plus inverse chamfer, thereby improving chip twisting while processing higher viscosity metals.

The required accuracy and surface finish determine the nature of grinding. The accuracy of the 5th grade, and surface finish 1 – 3d grades are achieved by a single grinding, higher levels of surface finish require secondary grinding or are achieved by fine grinding.

Description and main components of screw-cutting lathes

Screw-cutting lathes are included into the group of turning machines and are used for machining of metal parts and other materials. The billet is processed by turning (cutting). This type of machine produces the following types of work:

  • boring and turning of cylindrical, conical and shaped surfaces; threading;
  • trimming and end processing;
  • drilling;
  • sinking;
  • hole reaming, etc.

Screw-cutting lathes make up a significant portion of the cutting equipment stock.

Operating principle and configuration

An operating principle of the screw-cutting lathes is quite simple. A billet is fixed horizontally and then starts rotating. Movable cutter grinds excess material off.

Screw-cutting lathes can be automatic and semi-automatic. The main features of this machine type configuration is that the main body is stationary and the tool starts to operate after pressing special heads.

  • the maximum diameter of the billet (D) or the height of centers over base (0.5 D);

With regard to weight this type of machines is divided into four groups:

  • light, having weight up to 500 kg (D = 100 - 200 mm);
  • medium, having weight up to 4 т (D = 250 - 500 mm);
  • large, having weight up to 15 т (D = 630 - 1250 mm);
  • heavy, having weight up to 400 т (D = 1600 - 4000 mm).

Machines of medium weight produce 70-80% of total turning operations. These machines are characterized by high levels of rigidity, large capacity and a wide range of spindle speeds and feeds. These characteristics make it possible to work with the billets in eco mode, using modern advanced tools made of super-hard and hard alloys. Machines of medium weight can be equipped with various devices that enhance their technological capabilities as well as improve the quality of machining.
