Oil separators (oil skimmers). A brief overwiew

Oil separators (oil skimmers), or how else called oil catchers, are treatment systems, the main purpose of which is treatment of industrial wastewater from mechanical impurities and oil. The operation principle of such autonomous structures is based on the use of gravitational forces, i.e. wastewater is purified by settling.

It should be noted that oil separators (oil skimmers) of products (products oil separators (oil skimmers)) work on the same principle, their only problem is wastewater treatment by specific substances such as paraffin (petrochemical companies).

Today there are several basic types of oil separators (oil skimmers) (oil catchers):

  • horizontal;
  • radial;
  • multilayer (thin-layer).

Horizontal oil separators (oil skimmers)

Horizontal oil separators (oil skimmers) are large sedimentation tanks arranged with some several parallel sections formed by membranes. From the distribution chamber located separately, oily wastewater is moving through pipes seeping through slots in membranes to each section of the oil interceptor. Water refined from oil products moves toward the end of the section under a submerged wall holding oil, and, having passed through the weir, falls to a special discharge tray and into the pipeline. In winter, the surface of liquid is heated by a coil to reduce oil viscosity.

Transfer with swabs, in course of accumulation of oil on the surface, whisks it to rotary slotted pipes, through which it is removed from the oil interceptor. The same transfer removes sediment falling to the bottom of the sedimentation tank raking it to the pit. From there, slurry is periodically removed through slurry pipe by bottom valve or jet guns.

Operational efficiency of oil separators (oil skimmers)

The operational efficiency of oil separators (oil skimmers) largely depends on how well and reliably and slurry and oil interception devices are working, i.e. transfers with swabs. Leading and driven shafts must be installed sharply parallel to one another, and tension of chains (right and left ones) must be the same. Otherwise, a sudden break of chains may happen, that will damage the transfer, and this, in turn, will lead to a complete shutdown of all sections of oil separators (oil skimmers). Repair of the oil interceptor will be a lengthy and complex, which would entail delays.

Oil may be whisked up to slotted pipes with air, but in this case a periodic cleaning is required of oil interceptor sections from the precipitate, that is why it is necessary to shut down oil separators (oil skimmers) and empty their sections. Frequency of a forced shutdown is determined during operation.

It is worth noting that all currently existing oil separators (oil skimmers) have several drawbacks. For example, during adjustment work, it is very difficult to perform adjustment of switching due to rigid connection with walls, by the fact that slotted membranes are usually made of concrete.

Another membrane is added in some cases with uniformly distributed holes along it having diameter from 20 to 30 millimeters for a uniform distribution of workflow in the section. The number of these holes defines the basis of their total area, which is 6-8% of the cross sectional area of the section, where additional membrane will be installed. This partition can be made of any lightweight film material (nylon, polyethylene, polyester), as long as such a material is resistant to oil.

It is worth noting that installation of additional perforated membranes along the length of the treatment system with 6h interval (h - depth of the structure), allows to increase productivity of the oil interceptor by half at a similar efficiency.

Membranes made of film material are installed in several sections of oil separators (oil skimmers) in free space between swabs (upper and lower ones). They are attached mainly to the upper wall sections. This is done as follows. The upper edge of membrane is attached to the tube having mounting brackets aside. Another pipe is attached to the lower edge of membrane to tighten its light material. Then, the upper pipe is simply attached to walls of the section by mounting brackets.

Special storm drain is installed in the channel prior to treatment systems to prevent clogging of the jet gun with any major impurities. It is desirable that the gaps between the drain rods should not be more than 10 millimeters.

Water moves in the oil interceptor at speed from 3 to 10 millimeters per second. Thickness of oil layer of thickness is about 0.1 meters. The area of holes in the distribution membrane is typically less than 6-7 percent of its total surface area. Water pressure loss may be only 0.4-0.5 meters in the structure.

Calculation of oil separators (oil skimmers)

When calculating standard projects of horizontal oil separators (oil skimmers), the following data should be taken into account. The number of sections should be at least two, the width of each must be 2-3 meters provided that the depth of the water layer is 1.2-1.5 meters, and the capacity of the structure should not exceed 45 liters per second. If water consumption is higher, 6-meter wide and 2 meters deep section should be used.

Length (L) of the sedimentation part of the structure should be determined by the following formula:

L = (a·h·v) / u0

L – length of sedimentation part, m;
a – coefficient accounting water flow turbulence;
h – depth of layer, m;
v – speed, water is moving at, measured in mm/sec;
u0 – speed of floating on the surface of oil particles (taken in view of oil floating kinetics), mm/sec.
