But along with this, the ecological environmental situation deteriorates that makes manufacturers look for new gas and oil pipelines cleaning methods.
The state of outer walls of gas pipelines is diagnosed through visual inspection. The central hole of pipelines is inspected with the use of special devices, making it possible to detect not only contaminations, but also welding joints breakdowns, absence of pipeline electrochemical protection, trussed corrosion damages and insulating coating integrity. Selection of a type of cleaning systems for the central hole of gas pipelines depends on the variety of contaminations accumulated therein. In general, for this purpose batching pigs, scrapers and cleaning pigs are used.
Construction debris remaining in the gas pipeline after all construction and installation works are completed shall be removed with the use of scrapers; afterwards liquid is hydraulically displaced with the use of batching pigs. The application area of batching pigs is quite wide – they are used for cleaning and simultaneous air removal as well as for filling the pipeline with water for hydraulic testing and for water removal after all. However, it is not always reasonable to use them to clean very long pipelines. Cleaning pigs are used at the final stage of start-up and commissioning works, as well as during gas pipeline exploitation.
Scrapers made of such materials as cellular plastic, expanded foam or rubber foam as well as lip-type scrapers are deemed least effective for gas pipelines cleaning. These cleaning devices cover the most part of solid contamination, however while passing through the pipeline they worm them into splits caused by corrosion of its walls in the truest sense of the word. Afterwards these splits shall be also cleaned that makes application of the above mentioned scrapers a labor intensive and not very efficient cleaning method. In addition, low quality cleaning of these splits can therefore cause the pipeline integrity damage. It happens due to the activities of microbes in splits – debris contamination creates an additional protective barrier for them and an ideal environment for corrosion acceleration.
It is also not recommended to use mechanical scrapers for the reason that they often jump over contamination, can cause the full obstruction in debris movement and do not preserve the required degree of leakage. Existing types of these cleaning systems are characterized by inefficient application in the variable cross-section gas pipelines, as well as while crossing local blockages in their central hole.
The splits of the central hole of the pipelines can be cleaned with the use of the wire cleaner or Bi-Di scraper equipped with brush cleaners of thin wire, which are installed on the scraper in a certain way. Moreover, it is not recommended to use rectangular flat wire cleaners, as they are inefficient in splits cleaning. For the purpose of gas pipelines cleaning/blow-off special cleaning pigs removing both solid and liquid contamination with a high quality are also often used. They are equipped with several cleaning elements, which make them remove all foreign substances and agents from the cleaned surfaced more effectively. Due to the specialized design these types of cleaning pigs have no significant mechanical impact on the walls of the gas pipelines and allow the device to fit in a great amount of curve inserts inside such equipment.
Over the last years jellylike pigs enabling to carry out most of functions of standard cleaning systems became popular in gas pipelines cleaning, they are characterized by a high reliability compared to mechanical solutions and can even carry out chemical reactions, improving the cleaning result. Their main jellylike component part has a high adhesive ability, making it possible to cover contamination, dissolve and remove it from the gas pipeline to the extent the jellylike pig crosses it. The main advantages of these cleaning systems are preservation of their form, excellent elasticity and flexibility.
Jellylike pigs are more often used for condensate and contamination removal from the central hole of the gas pipelines in their hydraulic testing, pulling out stuck mechanical scrapers and introducing corrosion inhibitors. The quite efficient combination is deemed to be an application of the desiccative pig together with mechanical gas-pushing pigs. This makes it possible to empty the central hole of the gas pipeline of water simultaneously with its further drying within a relatively short time and with diminution in resources allocated to traditional cleaning methods.
The state of the central hole of the oil pipelines is diagnosed with the use of such methods as ultrasonic, visual, measuring, capillary, magnetometric, acoustic emission diagnostics and vibrodiagnostic control. These methods allow to detect accumulation of contamination in the pipeline consisting of grit, sand, cantharis, water, asphaltens and resinous materials which cause the wear and tear of the pipes and flange unions, decrease the oil quality and occlude the isolation valve.
One of the most widespread types of contamination inside the oil pipelines is paraffin debris. It makes the clear opening smaller and can cause the full obstruction of the oil pipeline. The paraffin debris is caused due to the pipeline oil cooling, its physical and chemical features, pressure variations in pumping and due to the physical process of setting of paraffin sediment from the oil products. The paraffin is usually allocated in the central hole of the pipeline by fits and starts, mostly accumulated at their top. This is caused due to the fact that these parts have lower temperature, and the lower parts are free of paraffin debris by the solid particles, tearing off contamination in the pipeline in the truest sense of the word.
In order to avoid constrained early cleaning, it is necessary to take preventive actions aimed at maintaining the throughput capacity of the oil pipelines. Such preventive actions constitute an annual tank cleaning of oil products remains, high-paraffin crude oil heat processing (heating and cooling up to certain temperatures), mixture of the pumpable type of oil with its low-paraffin or low-viscous types, its mechanical intermixing or introduction of special additives into oil increasing its liquidity.
For the purpose of oil pipelines mechanical cleaning in general special scrapers equipped with the cleaning elements in the form of various wire cleaners, disks and knives are used. Such cleaning devices differ not only by the efficiency of contamination removal, but also by the permeability and abrasive resistance – thus, modern metal scrapers can cross nearly 100 kilometers of the oil pipeline without excessive wear and tear. As for the permeability of scrapers, it is characterized by an ability of scrapers to cross a range of clamping shoulders, backing rings, passages, slide valves, bulges of welding joints and other obstacles.
In addition, while cleaning with the use of scrapers it is necessary to strictly oversaw compliance with the flow speed, certain level of pressure, pumping mode and movement of cleaning device along the length of the oil pipeline. In order to carry out the last task in more recent times special portable sound detectors consisting of the earphones, intensifier and microphone are widely used.
Cleaning spherical СН-scrapers made of high quality abrasion-resistant rubber have worked well too. They are equipped with metal and plastic round cutters, which are pressurized in their outer shell. Such scrapers have a valve through which they are pumped with hydraulic fluid under which pressure their outer diameter increases uplifting cutters above the device surface. Due to the special location of these cutters, the scraper enables to clean the entire central hole of the oil pipeline – as well as its analogue in the form of densely metal chain braided rubber spheres.
