These filter units belong to continuous filters. The main components of the filter are disks which consist of individual sections. Filtering and cake formation takes place on either side of each disk. The sectors are arranged on a horizontal rotating multicompartment shaft. The shaft is a hollow cylinder which consists of pipes to discharge filtrate and supply compressed air. The distribution head is pressed to the shaft end. The bath is equipped with a stirring device.
Disk sections communicate in series with the distribution head sections during filter operation.
Main zones of the disk filter:
- Filtration zone
In this zone, disk sections are immersed in the suspension and connected with the vacuum line. As a result, the liquid phase of the formulation passes through filter material, and the solid phase is settled on its surface. Then, the filtrate is supplied to the shaft channels through the sector cavity and flows down into the large cavity of the distribution head and then is discharged through the fitting.
- Dewatering zone
During dewatering, remaining filtrate and air are removed from the cake. Their mixture is discharged through filter material.
- Cake removal zone
The cake is removed by pulsating compressed air which is supplied through the fitting into the small cavity of the distribution head. The cake is collected into a specially designed bath. It has individual sections for each disk. There is a free space between the pockets whereto the cake is discharged to be then supplied to the conveyor.
- Cloth regeneration zone
In this zone, filter material is regenerated by compressed air or steam which is fed through the fitting.
Disc vacuum filters are the most effective for separation of suspensions with solid particles of the same size. A stirring device in the bath prevents settling of particles. This type of filters is characterized by an extended filtering surface while having a small footprint. Therefore, disk filters are well suited for large industry applications.
The supporting structure of the filters is made as a frame. Friction bearings are fixed at the frame ends to support the hollow shaft. The inner space of the shaft is divided by longitudinal ribs into compartments, and the number of compartments corresponds to the number of the disk sectors. There is a solid partition in the middle to divide the shaft into two mutually independent collector systems. Distribution heads are similar to the heads of drum filters and are pressed to the shaft ends. If a disk filter has a small filtering surface, one dispensing head is only allowed. Air is supplied to each distribution head from the receiver using quick valves.
The shaft can accommodate from 1 up to 14 disks. In case of equal filtering surface area, it is better to use the least possible number of disks to shorten compressed air channels. This parameter is crucial as a long channel is inefficient for supply of pulsating compressed air. Disks can have a various number of sectors either with grooved or perforated walls. They are covered with filter cloth or a mesh from the outside. The filter material is secured in slots located along the perimeter of a sector. The filter material can be also made as a sewn bag to cover a sector. In this case, the material is fixed in the narrow part of the sector. A hoop connected to the compartment shaft by a buckle is placed at the junction of adjacent sectors. The drive includes an electric motor with a stepped or stepless rpm control, V-belt transmission, gearbox, and an open gear set. A driven gear wheel is mounted on the compartment shaft.
The stirring device is designed as a two-bearing shaft located along the bottom part of the bath, with shaft bearings outside of the bath. The shaft is equipped with propeller agitators facing each disk pocket. The electromechanical drive allows stepped rpm control of agitators. In the chemical industry, the circumferential agitator speed is generally set to 1.4 m/s.
The disk filter is an analog of the drum filter. In this filter, disks with lateral filtering surfaces are used to increase its total filtering surface. Vertical disks are mounted on the horizontal rotating shaft. Both sides of each disc have a grooved surface covered by filter cloth. The disks are half-submerged in the trough whereto the filtered suspension is supplied.
The filtrate gets inside the disks due to the created vacuum and gets to the middle of the shaft along the grooves of the grooved surface. There is a distribution device on the one end of the shaft and a drive on the other end of the shaft. The cake formed on the cloth surface can be removed by knives.
The cake is not washed in these filters. The filtration zone is followed by the drying zone and the air blowing zone.
The advantages of the disk filter include a large specific filtering surface and replaceability of broken disks. The sealing problems cannot but be mentioned as a shortcoming. Disk vacuum filters are used primarily when there is no need in cake washing.
