A heating furnace is a set of equipment for solid materials heating to modify plastic properties and structure of these materials.

Heating furnaces are widely used in ferrous and nonferrous metallurgy, as well as in mechanical engineering.

Pusher furnace

A pusher furnace is a furnace where billets move along the furnace using an external device – a pusher. This is the easiest and most inexpensive way to move the metal through the furnace.

In this type of furnaces, the air intake is performed due to vacuum created by the jets of a gas fuel burner and a heated exchanger that operates as a chimney.

The length of the billet that is heated in the furnace is 5 to 12 m. The width of the furnace reaches 12.5 meters. Blast furnace gas is heated up to 200-250° C in a metallic exchanger made of blocks. Loading and unloading of billets from the furnace are sidemount (through the side windows in the furnace) and are performed by special pushers.

Furnace operation principle. The billet is fed to the furnace by a mechanical pusher from external roller conveyor through end-window, replacing the previous billet, and pushes the rest of the billets lying on the hearth.

To make boxing-in moving easier the hearth is tilted. The final section of the hearth is horizontal. The heated billet, which gets to the horizontal section of the hearth, is released from the furnace by a side pusher through the side window. The billets are heated to a temperature of 1100 to 1250° C depending on the steel grade.

Combustion gases (smoke), appearing during flaring in injection burners, move towards the metal and are removed through a cavity in the side walls and through the gaps between the billets and furnace walls. Then, the smoke travels through the exchanger and goes unfiltered into the atmosphere through the chimney.

In the welding zone of the pusher furnace, billets are moved through the water-cooled skid pipes. Raters are installed on them that reduce contact of the metal with a cold part of the longitudinal tubes and their wearing out, operating under 1100-1200° C and large mechanical loads. Raters ensure small outflow of heat from the slab and enhance regularity of heating along the length.

In the holding area, billets are moved along massive joists without cooling.

In pusher furnaces, losses of metal oxidation are typically 1.5-2%. Slag (scale) is removed from the hearth manually from time to time through the side windows of bottom welding and holding areas.

Travelling hearth furnace (THF)

A travelling hearth furnace is a continuous furnace where billets move cyclically, due to the reciprocating movement of the hearth.

Advantages compared to pusher furnaces:

  • due to absence of friction between billets and a hearth, as well as the lack of contact between the billets, they are not mechanically damaged;
  • billets heating can be both one-sided and three-sided.
  • reduced waste of steel ( up to 1%);
  • reduced fuel consumption (no skid pipes).

The principle of operation is as follows. Billets are pushed from the outer roller table to the hearth using a mechanical pusher. Then, they move through the furnace using a special walking mechanism located under the hearth, divided into an even number of walking and odd number of fixed sticks.

At the end of the furnace, each heated billet reaches the slide-ways (straight-inclined plane) at the next pacing cycle and pops up on the roller mill through the end of release.

Combustion gases formed in the flame zone, adjacent to the body, fall to the metal and then move along the furnace. Smoke removal from the furnace occurs through the roof and is guided to the heat exchanger.

Descaling is carried out manually via the viewing window in the welding and soaking areas.

Ring furnace

A ring furnace is a continuous furnace where billets are transported by the rotation of the ring hearth.

Ring furnaces have several advantages compared to other continuous furnaces:

  • billets are stationary on the rotary hearth, so furnace can heat circular cross section billets as well;
  • low metal fumes 0.5-0.7%;
  • perimeter heating of circular cross-section billets is evenly distributed;
  • possibility to transfer the furnace to chamber heating mode.

The furnace operates as follows. Billets (pipe or wheel) are placed into the furnace through the download window using external boot devices. Then, using cyclic displacement means of the hearth, the billets pass all heating zones and are released through the discharge window using external mechanisms as well.

There are burners on the inner and outer side walls of the furnace assisting multi-zone heating of the billets. Smoke from burning fuel moves toward the heated metal (rotation of the hearth) and passes three conditional zones: holding (1200-1250° C), welding (1300-1350° C), and continuous. At the end of the continuous zone combustion products with a temperature of 700-900° C pass through the chimney and come into a metal heat exchanger.

Walking-beam furnace

A walking-beam furnace is a continuous furnace where billets move cyclically, due to the reciprocating movement of water cooled beams. Transporting principle of billets is the same as in the travelling hearth furnace.

The main advantage of the walking-beam furnace is the most rapid heating of billets (four-sided heating). The main drawback is high heat losses with cooling water of branched water cooled beam system (support pipe).

The furnace operates as follows. The billets are transported to the end tenements by a roller conveyor, and move from it to a hearth using a pusher, settling down with a gap between them. The hearth is a system of support tubes (beams) with the grate raters fitted on longitudinal tubes. By beam walking, the billets are transported to the end of release and are extracted from the furnace by the piece dispensing mechanism at 1150-1250° C.

The furnace is heated by burners. Combustion gases pass above and below the billets. The smoke is removed from the furnace through the set at a temperature of 900-1100° C and is directed through the chimney into the exchangers.

The slag (scale) is removed manually or using compressed air or oxygen, which are fed using portable nozzles. Cleaning is performed through a viewing window at the bottom level of the working space.

Sectional heater

A sectional heater is a tunnel furnace where round billets are rapidly heated before rolling. Also, the furnace is used for heat treatment of long pipes and preheating of semi-feed in the rolling mill line. Billet diameter is 200 mm, length 3 meters.

The furnace consists of a large number of heating sections. Water-cooled rollers are installed between the sections (in the lobbies). The rollers mounted at an angle to the billet’s motion ensure its rotation and even heating. Barrel-type furnaces are heated by gas fuel.

The drawback of a sectional heater is possible overheating of a billet as they stop in during movement due to the high heat accumulating capacity of the section lining.

Each heating zone in the furnace has 4-6 sections. Each zone has its heat exchanger, which is connected by special chimneys. The number of sections in the furnace ranges from 1 to 40 pieces. The length of one section is 1-1.6 meters, length of a platform is 0.3-0.7 m.

The furnace operates as follows. The billets are moved by the roller table to the first section and are fed into a cantilever till they contact with the rollers in the platform between the first and second sections. To make the billet rest upon the rollers, its size should not exceed three distances between the roller axes. Passing all the zones with a constant speed, a heated billet is transported to the roller mill.

The burners are located in the opposite walls of the working chamber to provide different levels of circulating swirling motion of smoke around the heated billet. The temperature in the section may reach 1500° C.

Spent combustion products move out of the section to the platform, and then down to the chimney.
