Band filters are efficient and reliable equipment, the primary goal of which is continuous mechanical dewatering of household and industrial effluent pre-treated with macromolecular water-soluble substances called flocculants.
Band filters allow achieving a high degree of cake dewatering consistently affecting it by gravity, vacuum and gradually rising pressure. They are able to process suspensions different in their nature and properties that’s why they are widely used in many industries: petrochemical, coalmining, metal mining, metallurgy, food-processing, paper and pulp, as well as in public services at local waste treatment plants.
Suspension pretreated with flocculant is fed to the filling tray tightly mounted on the filter screen. Then it goes to the filter screen driven by the driving drum. There is a special gate at the filling tray output that equally distributes the cake over the surface of the filter screen and adjusts the thickness of its layer.
Liquid component of the cake is directed into the chamber under the effect of gravitational forces or vacuum, where it is removed from the equipment. Then the cake is moved to V-zone of low mechanical pressure formed by two screens (supporting and squeezing), which includes a large tubular drum and a smaller pinch roller. This area enables pressure adjustment using a special device that can increase or, conversely, reduce the degree of roller pressing to the screen and drum.
Then the cake enters pre-squeezing zone where mechanical pressure gradually raises by cake passing through metal balls, diameter of which increases according to their movement. Metal balls placed in the box made in the form of separator can be positioned either between the special supporting rollers or over them.
From then on the cake passes high-pressure squeezing system, which is formed by the rows of rollers, the diameter of which gradually decreases according to the sediment moving. Depending on the rheological (flexibility, viscosity, elasticity) properties of the moving cake, the upper rollers can be located like metal balls either between the lower rollers or over them. Before the cake will be removed with a knife, filter screens pass a small guide roller at first and a big driving drum after that, where their spreading occurs. The position of the knife that cuts off the cake can be changed.
The sensor and control rollers are in charge of the correct position of filter screens. Screens tension is provided by other rollers and direction of the bands movement is adjusted by the system of reversible rollers. Band filters can be equipped with special devices necessary for filter screens regeneration, i.e. restoration of their filtration properties, thereby providing stable performance and moisture of the cake.
All liquid from V-zone and squeezing zone as well as liquid generated after filter screens restoration is removed to the pallet system.
Band vacuum filters are continuous filters. The aggregates have a horizontal work surface, which is a drainage flexible endless band. The band is made of rubber-fabric material and passes over vacuum-chambers located between the driving and tension drums. There are the mats fixed on the band having the same design as the mats in the drum filters. To avoid mats damaging when the band is running, they are fixed with only one side by means of riveted joint. There are filtrate diverting windows under the mats. They are located along the band and are aligned with the windows in the spool-type gates of the table, over which the band moves. The lower (empty) band strand is located on supporting drums. Band edges are raised by the table borders in a manner to form grooves – suspension from the feeder and washing liquid from the trays is fed by them.
An endless converging sheet passing over the mats along working band strand is used as a filter membrane in a band filter. The sheet is moved together with the band after starting of suspension feeding and turning of vacuum system on. The filter design includes rollers that perform different functions: discharge, control, tension and a number of supporting ones. Screw-type roller is designated for smoothing of wrinkles formed on the cloth. Removal of the cake is carried out by a knife. Washing liquid is supplied from the nozzles and is fed from the inner side of the sheet. After washing the filtrate drains into the pallet, and the cake is taken out through the charging spout.
Apart from filters with convergent sheet, general-purpose filters are used. Their design is simpler and filtration cloth is attached to a rubber band, which has a special slotted profile.
Band filters are generally used for work with suspensions, the solid phase of which contains particles of different size, especially if the cake requires thorough washing. Elutriation system can be co-current or countercurrent.
The main advantages of band filter:
An endless band made of fabric and stretched on the guide rollers is used in band filters, an example of which is shown in the figure below.
As a result of friction the cloth moves along the endless band made of batt or felt. Such bands are stretched on the guide rollers too. They are driven by a pair of beads, which are used to remove moisture from the capillaries of suction felt band. A part of filter cloth positioned below is supported by the supporting gate moving the same direction as the cloth.
The suspension gets onto a band moving on the inclined tray. The liquid contained in the suspension is absorbed by capillaries of the felt band. Whereby solids remain on the filtering band and then are directed to the elutriation zone. Under the effect of capillary forces washing liquid is sucked in by the bands and the cake remained after washing adheres to the endless band, when the roll is passed round by filter cloth. Removal of the cake from the band occurs by means of a knife. To remove liquid from the band their blowing with hot air is used. Therefore, capillary forces are used instead of vacuum in such filters.
Band filters can be used for filtration of suspensions containing a small amount of solids. Such filters favorably differ from drum filters thanks to their simple design and high performance, if filtration of inhomogeneous cakes is necessary, as the band of this filter fits best to settle large particles.
