When heavy fractions concentration in the initial suspension is in the range of 5-30% and size of suspended particles is 5-40 µm, discontinuous centrifuges are used for its separation. They can operate in two modes: aiming at a predetermined period of time or at a predetermined thickness of cake. In the one case centrate is discharged through the discharge tube by the pump, and the residue is cut off by a hydraulically driven knife. In the other case the suspension enters the centrifuge continuously, and centrate is first discharged overboard until a predetermined layer of cake is formed. Thereafter the discharge of the contents is produced similarly to that in the first mode.
Tubular-bowl high-speed centrifuges with vertical bowl, where the length to diameter ratio is expressed by the proportion 7:5, are used for suspensions with a particularly low concentration (content of suspended particles is less than 1%) and in the case of a particle size of 0.5-1.5 mm. 3 to 4 ribs, located longitudinally, are provided inside the body to maintain the speed of suspension movement at the level of rotational speed of centrifuge body. "F" value in such centrifuges reaches 17.000 to 30.000 for industrial and laboratory equipment.
Tubular-bowl high-speed centrifuges can also be used in the case of large value of "factor of centrifugal separation" to separate trice emulsions in continuous mode. Separation into light and heavy fractions occurs through inner removable ring, diameter of which corresponds to the parameters of fractions density. Due to the high rotational speed, laboratory high-speed centrifuges have small dimensions (diameter of up to 150 mm, length of up to 1 m and a drum capacity of up to 10 l).
Nutsche filter is the simplest discontinuous unit. Typically it is used in low-power industries. It is a vertical cylindrical vessel divided internally by a horizontal membrane into two unequal tanks. Suspension is supplied into the upper part; the filtrate is collected in the bottom part. The pressure difference is caused by vacuum in the bottom part or by pressure increase in the upper part.
After completion of filtration the membrane is washed and residue is discharged. The bottom tank of the filter together with a membrane is made hinged or side hatches are mounted in the device body for this purpose.
Nutsche filter is a simple discontinuous filter, working under excessive pressure or vacuum. The filtrate movement and direction of gravity coincide in such filters.
Nutsche filter is a tank, having a double bottom. At that, upper false bottom is used to hold the filter material layer. Residue is retained on the filter membrane, and filtrate is discharged through the outlet under the influence of vacuum, created by means of a vacuum pump. After that filtrate is discharged into the receiving tank. From this tank the liquid, subject to be filtered, is pumped by a pump or transferred by compressed air for further treatment or to another filtration cycle if the degree of purification was insufficient.

It is necessary to filter liquids, evolving flammable or noxious vapors, under the pressure of inert gas or compressed air by means of a pressure-type Nutsche filters.
If the residue is subjected to further treatment in a liquid medium, Nutsche filter can be provided with agitators. This can greatly facilitate discharging. During the filtration process agitators are raised above the mass, subjected to be filtered. When the filtration process is over, they are put into it, after adding a small amount of washing liquid into the residue. In this case agitators must be lowered gradually to cut thin layers of residue and mix it with a washing liquid. After that an agitated residue is pumped down or discharged through a pipeline.
Filtration process in the pressure-type Nutsche filter occurs under the compressed air or inert gas pressure. The residue is discharged through a side hatch or hinged bottom.
