A speed reducer (planetary speed reducer and also known as planetary gearbox) is a mechanism, which transforms high angular speed of the input shaft into low speed at the output shaft. Moreover, the torque on the output shaft increases proportionally as the rotation speed decreases.
A speed reducer (planetary speed reducer) consists of a housing, where gear wheels, shafts, shafts bearings, their lubrication systems etc. are arranged. The housing provides for safety, good lubrication, and therefore ensures high efficiency in comparison to exposed gears, for example.
Description and principle of operation:
Planetary speed reducers have a number of features similar to those of the parallel-shaft speed reducers, since the force is also transmitted by a gear train, and gear wheels are used in the design. However, the design and principle of operation of planetary speed reducers is more complex.
Generally, a planetary speed reducer consists of the following parts: a ring gear, planetary pinions (satellites), carrier and sun gear. Like the Sun, which is located in the center of the Solar system, the sun gear is placed in the center of the speed reducer’s operating part. The sun gear is meshed with identical pinion gears, whose axes are positioned on the circle. The circle center is located on the sun gear axis. At the same time, the pinion gears are meshed with the ring gear, which is a gear wheel with internal teeth. The carrier rigidly fastens all pinion gears in relation to each other.
To make the planetary speed reducer operate, one of its parts (a sun gear, ring gear or carrier) need to be rigidly fastened in relation to the reducer housing. The gear ratio of the planetary speed reducer will depend on the selected driven and driving elements. The planetary reducer might operate even if none of its parts is fastened. In such a case it is possible to subdivide a single motion into two (for example from the sun gear to the ring gear and the carrier), or to combine two motions into a single one.

Since a higher number of teeth are involved in the force transmission, the load applied onto a single tooth is smaller, which is directly related to their life. Moreover, a special feature of a planetary speed reducer’s design (in particular, the arrangement of pinion gears) causes mutual compensation of the forces occurred, thus leading to a decrease of load onto the supports. Dense mounting of the reducer elements leads to smaller overall dimensions, and the reduction in noise level is achieved due to the conditions of gear teeth’s mesh.

The greatest disadvantage of planetary speed reducers lies in the complexity of their manufacturing and mounting. Even slight deviations in parts or errors during mounting can lead to severe problems in operation, including the breakage of a speed reducer. The reason of the second disadvantage lies in the increased contact area of the teeth as compared to parallel-shaft speed reducers with similar transmitted power. Though the difference in efficiency is nearly unnoticeable at low transmitted powers, as these powers are growing, the increasing friction loses lead to a decrease of the efficiency.
In spite of complexity, planetary speed reducers are widely used. They are successfully used in mechanical engineering and can be used as component parts of winch drives and other hoisting equipment. Planetary speed reducers are used in automatic gearbox of vehicles, where variable gear ratio is required.
A harmonic gear drive is a version of the planetary gear, but with a flexible intermediate wheel.
The gear drive consists of:
1. Wave generator – a cam or eccentric cam that stretches the flexible wheel until it contacts the circular wheel.
2. Flexible wheel with external teeth.
3. Circular wheel with inner teeth.
The rotation of a wave generator is transmitted to the flexible wheel. This flexible wheel is forced against a circular one so that their teeth mesh. Since there are always less teeth on the flexible wheel in comparison to the circular one, it shifts (cranks) after each rotation, thus causing the rotation of the flexible wheel about the wave generator.
