Functioning of the frame-type filter is based on forced feed of suspension into special chambers inside the housing, formed by packs of plates and frames. The filter membranes (made of special cloth) are laid in the existing gaps, covering the grooved drainage plate face. Filter membranes are also used as sealers in gaps between plates and frames. The holes are made in the plate mating face; when closing into the active position, they form uniform feeding lines for filtered suspensions, washing liquids, compressed vapor (or air) for slurry dewatering and filtrate and washing liquid drainage.
Operating process of the press-filter consists of four periodically repeating cycles:
Filtered suspensions are fed by operating pressure to the unit until its internal space is filled with slurry. The cake is periodically removed by water washing to prevent decrease of the filtering capacity. For this purpose, the water is pumped through the filtrate channel. The cake is pneumatically dried (6-7 atm) and discharged by gravity when the filter housing opens. The filter is disassembled by alternate withdrawal of the filter plates. Most of such filter presses are completely automatic.
Frame-type filter presses are widely used in the chemical industry for clarification of suspensions, solid phase separation in difficult-to-filter suspensions, separation of suspensions with the liquid phase similar to the saturated solution, as well as for separation of suspensions with high-viscosity liquid phase (which requires heating). Use of these filters is justified when time required for housing opening, cake discharge and subsequent closure makes just a small part of the whole operation cycle.
The advantage of frame-type filter presses is its extended filtering surface and design reliability in general.
Frame-type filters are widespread in suspension separation systems used for purification of slime waters and increase of cake dryness. The advantages of such filters (as compared to identical purpose-designed equipment) are as follows:
Another advantage is an extended lifetime (about 50 years) provided that filter cloth is regularly replaced (no more than once in 1-2 years).
Filter presses belong to overpressure batch-operated filters. Filtrate flow in such filters is perpendicular to the gravity direction.
The filter press is an assembly of alternating frames and plates which allows to significantly extend the filtering working surface. Moreover, the plates are vertically grooved to prevent filter cloth from adhering to the plates. This facilitates filtrate drain. The hollow frames are located between two adjacent plates to form cake accumulating chambers.
The plates and frames have through holes matching when the plates and frames are overlapped. Therefore, suspension, washing water and filtrate flow is ensured. Hydraulic, screw or any other are is used to press the frames and plates together.
During filtration, suspension is supplied to the hollow space between the plates. Then, the filtration process occurs, and the filtrate moves through the filter membranes and flows along the grooves to the discharge channels.
After the cake fills the inter-plate space, suspension feed is stopped, and cake washing begins. Washing liquid is brought to the cake through the channels, and then is removed through the taps. After washing, the cake is usually blown with compressed air to remove the rest of the washing liquid. After washing, the frames and plates are separated, and the cake falls into the receiver under the filter. If dead weight of the cake is not enough for its removal, the filter is cleaned manually.
The main advantage of frame-type filter presses lies in easy fixture of filter cloth on the frames. For this purpose, the cloth strip a bit longer than double height of the frame is cut. The strip is cut out using a template, perforated as required and then stretched over the plate.
Moreover, easy cake discharge is another advantage of frame-type filter presses. For this purpose, the press is parted, and the cake is discharged into a special container under the press.
In the process of cake blowing, compressed air flow is about 2.5 m3/h per each frame.
Units of this type consist of a frame-plate set, divided by filter cloth ("blanket"). Support bosses of the frame and plate housing are installed on horizontal beams of the housing "foundation" plate. The beams are fixed to the support plate and vertical posts by bolts and nuts. The clamping plate, which can be supported by rolls, is sliding along the beams. The clamping plate is actuated by an electromechanical drive.
The drive includes a screw pair connected to the electric motor through a special reducing gear. One screw end fastens to the clamping plate and therefore moves only translationally. Axial force is taken by the thrust bearing (or by the striker when the screw is reversed). As soon as the required clamping force is reached, the electric motor is automatically switched off by a signal from the relay (by a command of the limit switch when it is reversed).
However, a hydraulic clamp (used instead of electromechanical clamp) is considered more progressive and safe. The hydraulic clamp consists of a cylinder, hollow plunger (motionless hollow rod and grooved forcer), base and distribution device. The free end of the piston is fastened to the filter press plate and the piston moves forward together with the plate. The liquid is forced to the piston cavity through the hollow rod (operating pressure in the hydraulic cylinder is 1 MPa). The piston is fixed by a nut and is tightly screwed up to the hydraulic cylinder in the operating position.
A clamp with a manual actuator is applied only to rather small filter presses. Such clamp consists of a screw with a mounted ratchet and nut. The screw is tightened using the handle on the ratchet.
The plates are easily separated. For simultaneous opening of the chambers, the plates and frames are connected to the press plate by eye ends and moving pins. The pins can move in the eye ends over the gap width which is equal to the distance between the opened plates and frames. For sequential opening of the chambers and plates, the frames use a multilink chain with grips alternately engaging the plates and frames and moving them to the press plate.
The problem of manual discharge is more difficult. It requires auxiliary mechanisms. For example, the filter membrane is hung to adjustable frames in chamber filters. After the plates are opened, a pneumatic vibrator is actuated to remove the accumulated cake. Portable or stationary pallets are available for cake collection.
