In cone crushers, material pieces are crushed by continuous pressing of the flattened vertical cone, which rotates eccentrically inside another hollow cone. The surface of these cones can be both smooth and ribbed.
When the pieces of material are getting into the funnel, which is the cone machine operating space, they are ground between the hollow cone internal surface (external) and the flattened vertical cone internal surface (internal).
Producing rotary movement like a conical pendulum, the machine internal cone grinds material pieces by crushing, whereas big pieces are ground by crushing and bending.
It is precisely due to bending the energy consumption is reduced significantly, which is one of the main advantages of the cone crushers. Besides, this crushing method yields small quantities of dust-like and fine-grained product. This type of crushers is broadly used for preliminary crushing of different materials.
General operating principle
The cone crusher stationary body is equipped with crushing cone, which rotates inside it. This cone being driven by this eccentric starts oscillating movements changing the gap between the cone itself and the machine body. The material ground which is fed to the crusher, gets into the space between the body and the cone and in the narrowed gap between them it starts to be ground due to crushing and friction force. The fine product pouring occurs during the gap widening between the body and the cone. In this case, big pieces of material are sliding down into the gap and are ground into finer pieces during the next approach of the cone and the body.
Cone crusher with upper support for vertical shaft consists of two (external and internal) cones equipped with plates made from hard and wear-resistant steel. The external stationary cone (body) is fastened on a hard, cast or welded flanged base, whereas the internal cone (crushing head) – on the machine shaft. For small-size crushers the crushing heads are manufactured as cast-in-block, whereas for big machines – hollow ones.
Machine shaft is pivotally suspended from the support by means of a nut attached to its top, which rests against the steady bush. The internal cone is inserted into insert-eccentric located immediately under it, which rotated by the gear. The shaft lower part is installed eccentrically into this insert, so its axis produces a cone-like movement in free-space field. During the machine operation, the crushing head is permanently moving away from the external stationary cone catching up material, or is approaching it to press and crush the material pieces. The material is fed to the crusher through the supply funnel located in the body head. After grinding it goes between the two cones freely and gets into the lower gap. The gap size and the grinding degree can be altered by regulating the crusher shaft height with the nut,
There is a special pump for automatic lubrication of the cone crusher. External and internal cones plates of some machines are given curvilinear shape, which complies more with their natural wear. This allows not only to increase these plates service life, but also to significantly reduce the crusher outlet clogging.
The cone crushers with upper support for the vertical shaft usually demonstrate capacity from 0.75 to 4.5 thousand tons per hour. Their power consumption ranges from 3 to 400 kWt.
All types of the cone crushers are characterized by high productive capacity and even workflow. Their disadvantages (compared with jaw crushers) are structural complexity and high cost, big dimensions (height) and more complicated maintenance.
The mushroom-shaped crusher body is cone-shaped, which expands to one side with shallow taper of the crushing head. Their walls are parallel at some sections making a narrow gap. The body and base are connected with a number of springs located around the body perimeter. The dish from which pieces of material are dropped down is fastened at the shaft upper end. The degrees of materials grinding are regulated by changing the plates profile or the body position.
These devices are designed for medium crushing. The charging gap size is one of the most essential characteristics of such device.
Cone crusher with stationary vertical shaft has vertical stationary shaft. The internal body of this machine type produces not a cone-like movement in free-space field as in the previous crusher but cylindrical. Such design is viewed as more robust and stable because the total height of such crusher is reduced by about 40%.
Cone crushers with stationary vertical shaft unlike machines with vertical rotating shaft demonstrate a higher productive capacity and more efficient due to the following design feature: their internal cone exerts full pressure on the material. Besides, specific pressure on the eccentric is not significant in this machine.
One more type – cone crusher with console-located vertical shaft. It differs in several aspects from the crusher with upper shaft support. Mobile cone of this machine is made in shallow form, whereas inlet opening – the mouth has narrow inclining shape. Material moves chiefly due to inertia centrifugal force in such channel, while in the above machines it moves only due to gravity force action. Cone crusher with console-located shaft has an important advantage before other machines – it allows higher degrees of materials grinding (up to 30 per cent) due to the considerable difference between inlet and outlet size.
The crusher of this type is equipped with spring protective device, which protects the machine against accidental damage caused by accidental ingress of metal pieces.
Such crushers are characterized by rather high productive capacity totaling 300 tons per hour, and are chiefly used for medium crushing of different materials.
